novel study TWTWB

CHAPTER 9-13 questions.

Q.1 Because they can keep quiet and have access to the rest of the country.

Q.2 They were still innocent because they didn’t have to deal with ‘grown up’ things.

They are no longer innocent because of the things they have done, and because they have had to do ‘grown up’ things and make ‘grown up’ choices.

They have killed people and driven ferociously on the road.

Q.3 - im gonna kill you

    - they aren't afraid to blow things up
    - showing dominance

Q.4 - they went at night

    - went down side streets instead of main roads

    - get off their bikes and walled

    - be really quite

This shows that they are learning to not be seen, become invisible and go off grid, they plan everything before they act and they think like the other side and plan.

Q.5 - cold

  • fear

    - excitement

The coldness is probably because it is some stupid time in the morning and it is usually cold in the morning

melo drama

The Melodramatic Acting Style

  • Remember in Victorian Melodrama, all emotion is externalised. There is no such thing as inner psychological depth!

Generally this means “Over the Topin every way. Here are some techniques which help create this affect.

  • Slower, clearer delivery of lines with huge projection. Remember Victorian Theatres were huge and there were no microphones.

  • Play everything to the audience, even if you are supposed to be talking to another character on stage! Indicate whom you are talking to by looking sideways at them and holding your hand out towards

  • Address the audience directly whenever the script will allow you to do so.

  • The Pose: Invent poses of shock, horror, love, evil, intent, cruelty, desire, dilemma, forgiveness, begging forgiveness etc. A pose should last at least three seconds and should be clearly visible from fifty metres.

  • The working yourself up to the pose: lasts two to three seconds --let's see you getting there!

  • •

  • The Gasp - very loud expressing a range of emotions. Often accompanied by a pose.

  • The Swoon - often preceded by lines such as "Alas! I can hardly bear it." The swoon should be graceful and provision should be made for someone to catch you.

  • The long walk downstage/upstage/across stage when hatching a plan or in a dilemma

  • The Pacing- to and fro across the stage when hatching a plan or in a dilemma. Move before you speak so that the audience can track who is speaking

  • The Tableau (freeze frame)- the still picture made up of a number of characters to freeze the moment, eg: The Happy Ending/ The Secret Lovers. The tableaux should be very explicit

  • The Sigh/The Groan/The Tubercular Cough

First Entrances are important - may even bow, this is related to the cult of “The Actorthe Star system.

- good vs bad

- heightened emotion

- emphasis on action, violence and thrills

- extreme coincidence

- very dramatic

- slower and clearer

                              - colours - cold, clean, faded - washed out and worn a lot
                              - older clothes mended

EFFECT ON VIEWER:
- think they are poor - because clothes are outdated
                                  - peacekeepers/Effie in new clean out =fits

- think it is a bad living - emotionless, all the colour has been drained

- director purpose -  show the comparison/juxtaposition  of the district to the capital
                             - shows theme 'rich vs poor' because district doesn't have  access to recourse like                                    new clothing

OTHER TECHNIQUES:
- make up - style=status - Effie eye lashes are long + pink and her face is white. the district has no access or need for it

PICTURE 2

WHATS HAPPENING?
- in the capital, katniss + peeta just getting off the train, have never been there before.

DESCRIBE COSTUMES:
- bright colourful, neon, extravagant, vibrant, over-sized
- looks expensive and more fancy than casual
- over the top - excessive, more than needed to be piratical.

- fashion is shocking/ scary to the viewer - in your face and out there -  they have more then us
- think they are greedy
- show us how shocked/different things are for katniss and peeta

DIRECTOR PURPOSE:
- again shows the 'rich vs poor' - the people in the capital live in exteme luxary compared to the poverty of district 12
- people in the capital have everything

OTHER TECHNIQUES:
- MAKE-UP - over the top - caked on so we know they have lots of it, men and woman are both wearing it.

- SETTING - concrete, metal, glass, clean, crisp, futuristic, technologically advanced.

PICTURE 3

WHATS HAPPENING?
- in the arena of the hunger games

DESCRIBE THE COSTUMES:
- piratical clothes - suitable for fighting
                             - jackets, boots, shirts, long pants
                             - colours that will match surroundings - help them hide
                             - tells us about the area climate
                             - not going far as not much

EFFECT ON VIEWER:
- feels like they are dressed for war/hunting - all dressed same uniform.
- all look same - everyone has the same advantage.
                         - makes us less emotionally attached to individuals

burn Mg

AIM: to make a metal oxide and observe the difference in properties of the product compared to the reactants

EQUIPMENT: a piece of magnesium, Bunsen burner, safety glasses, metal scissor tongs

METHOD:
1) light your Bunsen burner
2) hold you piece of magnesium in the scissor tongs. ensure you are holding onto the very tip pf the magnesium.
3) place the other end of the magnesium into the Bunsen flame
4)when the magnesium begins to burn, do not look directly at it, as the light emitted can permanently damage your eyes.

RESULTS: i saw a bright light

DISCUSSION:when a metal reacts with oxygen it forms a metal oxide, and in this experiment we made magnesium oxide, it gave off a bright light.

CONCLUSION: this worked because it gave a bright light like it was meant to

testing pH levels

AIM: to test the pH of a range of household chemicals.

EQUIPMENT: a variety of household chemicals, spotting tile, red litmus paper, blue litmus paper, universal indicator solution, safety glasses.

METHOD:
1) add a few drops of each chemical to a spot on your spotting tile. if a substance is solid or powered you will need to mix it with a few drops of water before testing it.

2) test the chemicals with both red and blue litmus paper.

3) test each chemical with a few drops of universal indicator.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION:
1) dish washing power. I believe that this is a base as in all of the tests i did the colour was a blue and on the pH scale that means it is a weak base

2) vinegar. I believe that this is a mild acid because all of the tests I ran the colour was orange, indicating that it has a ph level of 3-5

3) baking soda. I also believe that this is a strong acid, because with the indicators came back with a strong red colour, with a predicted 1-3 on a Ph scale

CONCLUSION:
this experiment worked because colours were shown when they were meant to, as shown in this photo, curtsy to Mr Heath
